Things worth reading...

These books highlight principles that have transformed the way I approach my career and life. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  • Coram, R. (2004). Boyd: The Fighter pilot who changed the art of war. Back Bay Books.
----- Creativity. Maneuverability. Impact. Boyd's principles and practices of creative thinking and strategic decision-making and action should be known to everyone. It is also a stunning example of how to make a huge impact even if you are crusty, foul-mouthed, and difficult. [Website intro: Introduction to the Strategic Theories of John Boyd by Chuck Spinney, one of Boyd's closest acolytes]
  • Kahneman, D. (2013). Thinking, fast and slow. Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
----- Decision-making. Judgment. Uncertainty. What you never knew about how your mind works and gets in your way. Fundamental psychology that is essential for anyone whose work involves human behavior [Quick intro to concepts found in Kahneman & Tversky's classic Science article: Judgment under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases]
  • Krug, S. (2014). Don't Make Me Think, Revisited: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability. New Riders.
----- Information Design. Communication. Quality. An all-time classic and a quick and entertaining read. Not just for website developers. I've given this book to all my employees and friends for years. This simple principle works in all domains of life.
  • Smith, B. and Browne, C.A. (2019). Tools and Weapons: The Promise and the Peril of the Digital Age. New York, NY: Penguin Press.
----- Innovation. Regulation. Responsibility. An excellent outline of the impacts of technology and the complexity of what we need to do as a society to balance utility with safety and human rights. Highlights key issues ranging from privacy and security to international relations and diplomacy to the economics of industry collapse and workforce development.
  • Turnhout, E., Tuinstra, W. and Halffman, W. (2019). Environmental expertise: Connecting Science, Policy and Society. Cambridge University Press.
----- Integration. Complexity. Facts vis-a-vis People. Amazingly clear dissection of how science, policy and society interact in truly complex and intractable problems. Lots of fabulous examples. While this book is focused on environment issues, the basic issues are relevant to all complex social problems, like public health, security, and information. Must read for anyone who wants their work to have practical impact on society.
  • Other books I believe that most professionals should be familiar with (at least the basic concepts) include: Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions and Bruno Latour's We Have Never Been Modern. And for those who have the intellectual bravery to go deep on the subject of quality and the challenges posed by the everpresent dualities that confound us in every aspect of personal life, economics/business, and international society, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig is still the philosophical benchmark, as far as I'm concerned.
